Side by side

Kindred Tales vs My Life in a Book

Both send your parent a question each week and turn the answers into a color hardcover. Where they part ways is what happens when the answer doesn't come easily.

The short version

My Life in a Book sends the question. Kindred Tales stays for the answer. Ali asks the follow-ups, your parent can simply talk, and the recordings are yours to download and keep along with the book.

My Life in a Book details reflect their public product pages when this page was written. "Not listed" means we could not find the feature there, so check mylifeinabook.com for current specifics.

The biggest difference

They send the question. Ali asks the next one.

A weekly prompt works when someone already knows what they want to say. Plenty of parents don't. They answer in two sentences, or they tell you they have no stories worth telling.

Ali asks the follow-ups

Ali is a guided interview, and she comes with the AI Edition. She listens to the answer and asks what a good friend would ask next. Who else was there? What did the kitchen smell like? That is where the details come from.

Five ways in, not one

Reply to the weekly email. Type online. Talk and watch the words appear. Sit down with Ali. Or upload a recording you made years ago. Your parent can use a different one every week. The three that start with talking come with the AI Edition.

You keep the voice too

When your parent speaks a story, the audio stays in your account to download and share. The book holds the words. The recording holds how they sounded saying them.

Choose Kindred Tales

Kindred Tales is the better fit when your parent would rather talk than type, goes quiet in front of a blank page, or already has recordings you don't want to lose. Ali, speech-to-text and transcribed uploads all come with the AI Edition.

Common questions

Choosing between the two

The questions families ask us when they're weighing both.

Does My Life in a Book have an AI interviewer?

We couldn't find one on their product pages. They describe weekly questions answered by typing or voice-to-text. The Kindred Tales AI Edition includes Ali, a guided interview that asks follow-up questions and turns the conversation into a draft your parent can edit.

Can my parent just talk instead of typing?

With either service, yes. Both turn speech into text, and ours comes with the AI Edition. That edition adds two more things. Ali can lead the conversation so your parent is never talking into silence, and you can upload recordings you already have and we'll transcribe them.

Do we get to keep the recordings?

With Kindred Tales, yes. Audio your parent records stays in your account to download and share. My Life in a Book describes voice-to-text, which turns speech into written words, and their pages don't mention keeping the original audio. They do offer an optional audiobook, a narration of the finished book made from a short clip of your parent's voice.

Is either one a subscription?

No. Both are a one-time purchase that covers a year of prompts and a printed hardcover.

Will Ali rewrite my parent's words?

Only if they want that. They choose how each story reads: just their words, lightly polished, or a draft Ali shapes from what they said. Every version stays fully editable, so the story reads in your parent's voice and not ours.

Can we move over from My Life in a Book?

Yes. Keep anything already written there as a record, and start a Kindred Tales book whenever you're ready. Stories can be pasted in, or told again out loud with Ali.

One-time purchase. No subscription.

Pick the gift that fits them.

Both editions ship hardcover. Both include a year of weekly prompts. The AI Edition adds Ali, our AI biographer, for the people who'd rather talk than write.
